Our Mission Statement

The After Prom Grand Finale event takes place at the end of the school year and is an additional incentive for students to stay until the end of their school’s after-prom party. In all of the years of the After Prom Grand Finale event, NONE of the participating schools have experienced the tragedy of a drug or alcohol-related accident on prom night.

Why is the After Prom Grand Finale important?

Prom is one of the most exciting nights for a teenager, but it can also one of the most dangerous. Last year, 5,276 students from 40 high schools across Southwest Virginia stayed until the end of their school’s after-prom party because of the After Prom Grand Finale. That is 5,276 youth who made it home safely to their families after one of the biggest nights of their young lives.

During the past 30 years of this annual event, NONE of the schools participating in the After Prom Grand Finale have experienced the tragedy of a drug or alcohol-related accident on the night of their prom. This event is important to participating high schools because students can only qualify if they stay until the end of their school’s after-prom party.

Where does the sponsorship money go?

The After Prom Grand Finale is an event owned by the YOVASO (Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety) Advisory Board, a nonprofit organization. All funds raised for the After Prom Grand Finale will be used to reward students for staying until the end of their school’s after-prom party and support participating schools in their efforts to provide engaging parties. Examples of incentives include:

  • Early Registration $250 cash prizes for 2 schools

  • Refreshments for the School Representatives’ meeting in March

  • A $100 gift card to be used for 1 school’s after-prom party

  • A “Stay Until the End” award and cash prize of to encourage schools to have the highest percentage of students staying until the end of their party

  • High-value prizes ($1,300 each) for two 2nd Place winners at the event

  • T-shirts for student Qualifiers at the event

  • A photographer for the event

  • Other prizes and/or cash incentives as funds allow

I have led our school through organizing and hosting 3 After-Prom parties. I am leading the charge for After-Prom 2019 too. Our school’s After-Prom is an inclusive event. We remove barriers and ensure our students, and their guests, feel safe and welcomed.
The After Prom Grand Finale Event, and the opportunity to represent our school at After Prom Grand Finale, contributes greatly to our “lasting power.” We find that about ¼ of After-Prom attendees stay until the end, just to have a chance to win a car. That’s about 75 students, which we think is fabulous. This past June, 5 of our students attended the After Prom Grand Finale. Two of those students won door prizes, which I know they’ve talked about with friends. In turn, I envision this being a useful marketing tool in spring 2019.

We need your help to make sure this incredibly positive impact continues to happen. Will you support the After Prom Grand Finale and help recognize and reward these youth for making the choice to stay alcohol and drug-free on their prom night?

First Team Auto Mall, Wheeler Broadcasting, Virginia First (WFXR) and K92 radio have been incredible partners over the years and are now working with the YOVASO Advisory Board to help promote the event.  The Salem Civic Center is donating valuable venue space. Additionally, Jack Jackson and Freddy Mac from K92 radio will be emceeing the event. We are grateful that so many businesses in our community see the value in keeping teens safe on prom night!
